Hyderabad: The Nagarjuna Sagar Dam’s security is currently under the spotlight following significant developments. While the dam’s security is generally managed by SPF personnel from Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, the Krishna River Management Board (KRMB) recently handed over the dam’s supervision to the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) amidst ongoing water disputes.

On Saturday morning, the CRPF withdrew its personnel from the Telangana side of the dam, allowing the SPF to resume security duties. However, by 7 PM, the CRPF re-assumed control of the main dam, sparking discussions over the sudden shift in responsibilities.

Speaking on the matter, Dam SE Sridhar Rao stated that they had not received any prior communication about the developments, adding that KRMB is overseeing the situation. CRPF Assistant Commandant Saheer clarified that the withdrawal and subsequent return of CRPF personnel were carried out as per higher authorities’ instructions.

The Nagarjuna Sagar project has been a point of contention between Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, especially during the previous Telangana Assembly elections. Despite Telangana submitting indents to the Krishna Board, repeated requests were often necessary. The Telangana government had also written to the board, stating it would independently operate the gates on its side, including Gate 13.

These recent changes in security arrangements reflect the sensitive nature of dam management amid ongoing disputes.
