Students of Hyderabad Central University (HCU) have intensified their protests against the proposed sale of university land, demanding an immediate halt to the auction. On Saturday night, a large-scale demonstration was held, prompting police intervention to disperse the protestors.

Tensions further escalated on Sunday when government workers, under official supervision, began cutting down trees within the university premises. Students attempted to stop the activity, leading to a confrontation. In response, police locked the university’s main gate while JCBs were deployed to clear the land. Several students were detained, drawing strong condemnation from the Telangana unit of SFI, which has demanded their immediate release.

Dispute Over Land Ownership

Student unions allege that the government has been reclaiming university land under various pretexts. They claim that HCU was originally established on 2,300 acres, but over the last 50 years, nearly 500 acres have been taken back. According to UGC records, only 1,800 acres remain, and the government now plans to auction an additional 400 acres through TSIIC.

The decision has triggered widespread opposition from student groups, workers, and both teaching and non-teaching staff. However, the government has clarified that the 400-acre parcel does not belong to HCU and has been transferred to TSIIC based on a court ruling. If the auction proceeds, the university’s total land area will be reduced to 1,400 acres.

Amid the growing controversy, HCU alumni, including Deputy Chief Minister Bhatti Vikramarka and IT Minister Sridhar Babu, are being urged to intervene and ensure that the land remains with the university. Reports indicate that the land, located near Hyderabad’s IT corridor, has a market value of approximately ₹10,000 crore, making its sale a significant revenue opportunity for the government.
