Extensive Damage Reported in Telangana Due to Heavy Rains and Floods

The recent heavy rains and subsequent flooding have caused substantial damage across Telangana. Preliminary estimates from officials indicate a total loss of Rs 5,438 crores in the state. The breakdown of the damage is as follows:

– Roads and Buildings: Rs,362 crores
– Municipal Administration: Rs ₹1,150 crores
– Irrigation Department: Rs 629 crores
– Crop Damage: Rs 415 crores for 4.15 lakh acres
– Electricity Department: Rs 175 crores
– Panchayat Raj Department: Rs 170 crores
– Animal Husbandry Department: Rs 25 crores
– Medical and Health Department: Rs 12 crores
– Other Departments and Public Property: Rs 500 crores

The Agriculture Department’s preliminary estimates reveal that crop damage has occurred in 999 villages across 131 mandals in 22 districts, affecting 4.15 lakh acres, with an estimated loss of Rs 415 crores. The highest damage is reported in rice crops (1.80 lakh acres), followed by cotton (1.06 lakh acres) and maize (over 20,000 acres). Other affected crops include chili, pulses, soybeans, and vegetables. A detailed report on the crop losses has been submitted to the government.

Khammam, Mahabubabad, and Suryapet districts have experienced the highest percentage of crop damage. Additional affected districts include Bhadrachalam, Narayanpet, Warangal, Siddipet, Kamareddy, and Adilabad. A total of 85,323 farmers have reported losses, with the highest number in Khammam (46,374), followed by Mahabubabad (18,089) and Suryapet (9,227).

The Telangana Agriculture University has issued a warning about the increased risk of pests and diseases due to standing water in crops from the heavy rains. Farmers are advised to take preventive measures to mitigate these risks, especially for crops such as rice, maize, cotton, soybeans, pulses, and minor pulses. Early intervention is recommended to protect crops from further damage.
