Exhibitors Warn Against Screening Films with Increased Ticket Rates

A renewed debate has emerged in the Nizam region of Telangana over cinema ticket pricing, as theatre owners (exhibitors) have called for a shift from the existing rental system to a percentage-based revenue-sharing model. The demand was made during a press meet held by exhibitors, where they highlighted long-standing concerns regarding revenue distribution in the film exhibition sector.

Exhibitors argued that the current rental system is causing financial strain on theatres, while producers are reportedly gaining higher profits from box office revenues. They cited several recent high-budget films as examples, stating that despite strong collections, theatre owners are not receiving equitable returns under the prevailing model.

During the press meet, SVC head Shirish Reddy made a significant statement, announcing that exhibitors have collectively decided not to screen films that are released with increased ticket prices. He further clarified that this decision would remain unchanged even if government orders (GOs) permit higher ticket rates.

The development is expected to have implications for upcoming major releases, particularly Ram Charan’s film ‘Peddi’, which is scheduled for release within the next month. The film is being distributed in the Nizam region by Mythri Movie Makers, and the ongoing dispute has raised concerns within the industry regarding its release strategy.

At present, no consensus has been reached between exhibitors and producers over ticket pricing or revenue-sharing mechanisms. The stalemate continues, and industry stakeholders are closely monitoring whether a resolution will be achieved or if the disagreement will further impact film releases in the region.
