Ahmedabad, Gujarat: The devastating plane crash in Ahmedabad that claimed nearly 270 lives has taken a grim turn with confirmation that former Gujarat Chief Minister and senior BJP leader Vijay Rupani was among the deceased. Gujarat Home Minister Harsh Sanghavi confirmed on Sunday that Rupani’s remains were identified through DNA testing, three days after the tragedy.
The confirmation followed a match between the DNA of the recovered body and samples provided by Rupani’s family. Authorities subsequently handed over the mortal remains to the family. BJ Medical College officials stated that DNA tests have so far identified 32 victims, with 14 bodies returned to their families. In addition, eight bodies were handed over after being visually identified by relatives.
Due to the high-impact nature of the crash, many bodies were mutilated beyond recognition, making DNA analysis essential for confirmation. Officials noted that the testing process is time-consuming, which has delayed the handover of several bodies.
To streamline coordination with victims’ families, authorities have deployed 230 special teams. Officials have also confirmed communication with the families of 11 foreign nationals who were among those killed in the crash.
