In Karnataka politics, fresh speculation has emerged over a possible leadership change following reports that Chief Minister Siddaramaiah was called to Delhi for consultations with the Congress high command. The development has triggered renewed discussions on internal power equations within the state Congress. However, party leaders have strongly dismissed reports of any imminent change in leadership.
Congress sources clarified that routine visits to Delhi by both Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Deputy Chief Minister D. K. Shivakumar often lead to speculation regarding an alleged “2.5-year power-sharing agreement,” which the party maintains does not exist. The leadership has reiterated that Siddaramaiah continues to enjoy the full confidence of the high command.
According to party insiders, discussions held in Delhi have reinforced Siddaramaiah’s position as Chief Minister, with his strong support base among legislators being a key factor. It is reported that a majority of Congress MLAs in Karnataka continue to back him, strengthening his leadership position within the state unit.
Sources further indicate that the purpose of Siddaramaiah’s Delhi visit is linked to a possible cabinet reshuffle rather than a leadership change. The Congress high command is reportedly planning to induct new faces into the cabinet while also balancing representation between factions aligned with Siddaramaiah and D. K. Shivakumar. There is also speculation that Shivakumar may be assigned additional responsibilities, including the Home portfolio.
Meanwhile, deliberations are underway regarding the upcoming Rajya Sabha elections in Karnataka, where three seats are expected to be filled. Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge is likely to secure one seat, while another may be considered for D. K. Suresh, brother of D. K. Shivakumar, who recently lost the Lok Sabha elections.
Political observers note that internal dynamics in Karnataka Congress remain complex, particularly with Mallikarjun Kharge playing a key role in decision-making at both state and national levels. His son Priyank Kharge currently holds ministerial responsibilities in Rural Development, Panchayat Raj, and IT portfolios.
Amid ongoing speculation, reports also suggest that in the event of any future leadership transition, Siddaramaiah may be considered for a Rajya Sabha position and a role within the AICC, while his son Yathindra could be accommodated in the state cabinet. However, Congress leaders maintain that no immediate leadership change is on the agenda and all decisions will rest with the party high command.
