A suicide bomber attacked a Shia mosque in Pakistan’s capital, Islamabad, on Friday, killing 50 people and injuring around 170 others. The attack took place during midday prayers at the Khadija tul Kubra Mosque in the Tarlai Kalan area, leaving the nation in shock. Security personnel prevented the attacker from entering the prayer hall, forcing him to detonate the explosives at the entrance. The blast caused severe damage to the mosque’s walls and roof, and victims were rushed to nearby hospitals, including PIMS and Polyclinic. Authorities have warned that the death toll may rise due to the critical condition of many injured.
The Islamic State has claimed responsibility, stating that the attack specifically targeted the minority Shia community. The incident prompted widespread outrage in India, where Shia groups staged massive rallies on Saturday, particularly in Hanjivera, Baramulla district, Jammu & Kashmir. Protesters, including men and women, marched along the Srinagar-Baramulla national highway, condemning the attack and raising slogans against terrorism. Videos of these demonstrations circulated widely on social media.
United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres strongly condemned the attack, describing assaults on places of worship as “inhumane” and stating that such acts will never be tolerated under any circumstances.
