In a major crackdown over the weekend, a large number of drunk driving offenders were caught under the jurisdictions of Hyderabad and Cyberabad Police Commissionerates. A total of 728 individuals were booked for driving under the influence during special “drunk and drive” checks conducted across the two regions, reflecting growing concerns over road safety.

Hyderabad Traffic Police, during checks held on May 1 and 2, caught 445 offenders. Among them, 371 were two-wheeler riders, 26 were three-wheeler drivers, and 48 were driving cars and other vehicles. Cases were registered based on the Blood Alcohol Content (BAC) levels of those caught, officials said.

In Cyberabad, traffic police booked 283 offenders in a similar special drive. The violators included 227 two-wheeler riders, 39 car drivers, 9 three-wheeler drivers, and 8 heavy vehicle drivers. Additional Commissioner of Police G. Hanumantha Rao stated that all those caught would be produced before the court.

Police officials issued strict warnings, stating that if drunk driving leads to fatal accidents, cases will be registered under Section 105 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023. This provision carries a punishment of up to 10 years in prison along with fines, highlighting the seriousness of the offence.

Authorities noted that road accidents linked to drunk driving are on the rise, prompting intensified enforcement. Emphasising a zero-tolerance policy, police said such special drives will continue regularly to curb violations and prevent further loss of lives.
