New Delhi/Hyderabad: The Central government on the occasion of the 77th Republic Day announced the prestigious Padma Awards, recognising unsung contributors who have rendered exceptional service across various fields. This year, 45 eminent personalities have been conferred with the Padma Shri, including two distinguished achievers from Telangana.
Hyderabad-based genetic scientist Dr. Kumaraswamy Thangaraj and Rama Reddy Mamidi from Nizamabad district were selected for their outstanding contributions in Science & Engineering and Agriculture, respectively.
Dr. Thangaraj, a senior scientist at the Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology (CCMB), has dedicated over three decades to research in human evolution, ancient DNA, and genetic disorders. His pioneering work on tracing the origins of Andaman tribal communities has earned international recognition.
Rama Reddy Mamidi was honoured for his transformative efforts in animal husbandry and the dairy sector, with officials noting his significant role in strengthening rural livelihoods and the rural economy.
Awardees from across the country include Ankegowda of Karnataka, a noted book enthusiast; Natesan and Thiruvaiyyur Bhaktavatsalam from Tamil Nadu; and environmentalist Devaki Ammaji, among others. The list also features individuals such as Hali War, Khem Raj, and Srirang Devabalad for their dedicated service in literature, arts, social work, and healthcare.
The selection has drawn widespread appreciation, particularly for recognising individuals who have worked quietly for societal welfare without seeking publicity. The awards will be formally presented by the President of India at a special ceremony at Rashtrapati Bhavan in the coming weeks.
