New Delhi: The Government of India has revoked the security clearance of Turkish aviation services provider Çelebi Ground Handling at Indian airports, citing national security considerations. The decision, announced on Thursday, comes in the wake of growing public and diplomatic backlash against Turkey for its open support to Pakistan during heightened tensions between India and its neighbour.
Despite receiving humanitarian assistance from India during its devastating earthquake, Turkey publicly backed Pakistan and was accused of providing drones to escalate regional hostilities. The development has led to widespread calls across India to “Boycott Turkey,” significantly impacting Turkey’s tourism-driven economy. Several academic institutions, including Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), have reportedly severed ties with Turkish universities.

Following the government’s move, Çelebi approached the Delhi High Court challenging the cancellation. In its plea, the company argued that the revocation was based on unspecified national security concerns and claimed that the decision lacked transparency and due process.
Çelebi also warned that the government’s action could jeopardize 3,791 jobs and undermine investor confidence in India. The firm further asserted that it operates independently of the Turkish government, is professionally managed by Indian experts, and adheres to globally recognized corporate governance norms.
The company maintained that it should not be classified as a Turkish entity and expressed its commitment to operational neutrality and transparency. The matter is now under judicial consideration.
