New Delhi/Phnom Penh: In a sweeping crackdown on online and digital fraud, Cambodian authorities have arrested 3,075 individuals across 138 locations in the country over the past 15 days. The large-scale operation was launched following requests from India’s Ministry of Home Affairs, Ministry of External Affairs, and the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C).

Among those arrested, 105 are Indian nationals. According to official sources, intelligence inputs had indicated that Cambodia was emerging as a hub for cybercrime networks targeting multiple countries, including India.

The detainees include individuals from various nationalities: 1,028 Chinese, 693 Vietnamese, 366 Indonesians, 101 Bangladeshis, 82 Thais, 81 Pakistanis, 57 South Koreans, 13 Nepalese, and 4 Malaysians. In addition, suspects from the Philippines, Nigeria, Myanmar, Russia, and Uganda were also apprehended. Of the total arrested, 606 are women.

Authorities seized a significant cache of digital and illegal items, including computers, laptops, mobile phones, narcotics, weapons, ammunition, drug processing machines, and counterfeit police uniforms resembling those of Chinese and Indian forces. In some cases, banned substances such as ecstasy powder were also recovered.

Officials believe that several more individuals associated with the racket are yet to be arrested and that the network could have international links extending beyond Cambodia.

India has initiated diplomatic efforts to facilitate the repatriation of the 105 arrested Indian citizens. Senior officials from the Ministry of Home Affairs and Ministry of External Affairs held discussions with Cambodian authorities last month regarding the matter.

Meanwhile, the Indian government has issued a public advisory urging citizens to remain vigilant against fraudulent job offers and illegal operations originating from Cambodia, cautioning against involvement in cyber scam networks active in the region.
