Bangladesh and Pakistan have been steadily strengthening their bilateral ties, particularly in the defense sector. At a recent airshow in Dubai, Pakistan announced that it plans to sell JF-17 Thunder Block-3 fighter jets to a friendly nation, which multiple reports suggest is Bangladesh.

Since the return of the Sheikh Hasina government, defense cooperation between Bangladesh, Pakistan, and China has been gradually expanding. In this context, acquiring modern fighter jets like the JF-17 would significantly enhance the capabilities of the Bangladesh Air Force, which currently operates older aircraft such as the F-7, MiG-29, and Yak-130.

According to Defence Security Asia, Pakistan could supply Bangladesh with 16 to 24 JF-17 Thunder Block-3 jets, with the deal estimated to be worth between USD 400 million and USD 700 million. The acquisition would position Bangladesh among nations with advanced combat aircraft, bolstering its air defense strength.

The potential sale is also being closely monitored by India, given its implications for security in the northeastern region. The JF-17 Thunder Block-3 is a joint development of Chengdu Aircraft Corporation and Pakistan Aeronautical Complex, representing a significant upgrade in modern fighter technology for Bangladesh.
