Anti-India Protests Erupt in Bangladesh Following Osman Hadi’s Death

Bangladesh has witnessed a fresh wave of violent protests following the death of young political leader and Inquilab Manch representative Sharif Osman Hadi, who played a key role in the nationwide public movement that led to the fall of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s government. As news of his death spread, unrest erupted across the country, with protesters setting fire to offices of the Awami League and attacking the premises of leading newspapers. Demonstrations were also held outside the Indian High Commission in Chittagong, where protesters raised anti-India slogans, alleging foreign involvement in Hadi’s killing.

Hadi was shot dead by unidentified assailants, triggering widespread anger among his supporters. Having entered politics during his student years, he built a strong following and was known for his outspoken opposition to India and his stance against foreign influence on Bangladesh’s sovereignty. He played a pivotal role in the movement that resulted in the collapse of the Sheikh Hasina government. Following the regime change, Hadi served as convener and spokesperson of the political platform Inquilab Manch. His death has intensified public sentiment, with sections of protesters directing their anger towards India, leading to further violence and instability.

The situation is particularly sensitive as Bangladesh is scheduled to hold national elections in February next year, the first since the fall of the Hasina government. The killing of Osman Hadi and the subsequent unrest have raised serious concerns both domestically and regionally. Relations between India and Bangladesh, once close, have deteriorated sharply over the past year amid student protests, violent incidents, Sheikh Hasina fleeing the country, and her subsequent stay in India. Bangladesh’s demand for Hasina’s extradition has been rejected by New Delhi, further straining ties. Interim government chief Muhammad Yunus has also signalled a tilt towards closer relations with Pakistan, while remarks perceived as favourable to China on issues related to India’s northeastern states have added to diplomatic tensions.

Amid the political turmoil, tensions have also escalated in the Bay of Bengal. Bangladesh has been accused of provocative actions, including frequent incursions by its fishing boats into Indian territorial waters and increased naval patrols along the maritime border. Indian fishermen have reportedly been detained, boats seized, and confrontations with Coast Guard personnel have taken place. Analysts warn that the killing of Osman Hadi, allegations of foreign involvement, and rising anti-India sentiment could further widen the rift between the two neighbours, with potential security implications for the region.
