A major accident occurred at the Srisailam Left Bank Canal (SLBC) tunnel, where a three-meter section of the ceiling collapsed. The incident took place at the 14th kilometer of the left-side tunnel near Domalapenta at approximately 8:30 AM on Saturday. According to initial reports, ten workers sustained injuries, while seven are believed to be trapped inside.

The government had recently resumed construction work to expedite the project’s completion. Four days after work restarted, the ceiling gave way, leading to the accident. Officials are on-site assessing the situation, and rescue operations are in progress. The injured workers have been shifted to GENCO hospital for treatment.

Responding to the incident, Minister Uttam Kumar Reddy directed officials to initiate immediate rescue measures. He stated that he was informed of the accident and is on his way to the site.

The SLBC project was initially approved in 2005 under the then-Congress government at a cost of Rs 2,200 crore. Since then, successive governments have extended the project deadline six times, with the latest deadline set for June 2026. The project cost was revised to Rs 3,152.72 crore in 2017 and was recently increased to Rs 4,637 crore by the Congress government. So far, Rs 2,646 crore has been spent on the project.
