Amaravati: Andhra Pradesh has recorded its first death due to Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS), prompting the state government to step up precautionary measures. A 55-year-old woman, identified as Kamalamma, succumbed to the syndrome on Sunday while undergoing treatment at Guntur Government Hospital.
A resident of Alsandapalli village in Komarolu mandal, Prakasam district, she was admitted to the hospital on February 3 with symptoms including high fever and paralysis in her legs. Medical examinations confirmed GBS infection. Despite intensive care and ventilator support, her condition worsened over the past two days, leading to her demise.
Health authorities have advised vigilance, emphasizing that while GBS is not a highly contagious disease, severe cases can be life-threatening.
Last month, Maharashtra reported 170 GBS cases across Mumbai and Pune, with eight fatalities. The syndrome primarily affects the nervous system, leading to progressive deterioration in patients.
