Andhra Pradesh PCC Chief YS Sharmila has lauded the caste census initiated by the Congress government in Telangana, calling it a model for the entire nation. She described the initiative as a historic milestone and a guiding framework for the country’s future. She credited Rahul Gandhi’s vision for this significant move and highlighted that the census revealed surprising statistics—56% of Telangana’s population comprises BCs, 17% SCs, and 10% STs, amounting to nearly 90% of the state’s population belonging to marginalized and weaker sections. She asserted that a similar demographic composition exists in Andhra Pradesh.

Sharmila demanded that the Chandrababu-led government conduct a caste census in Andhra Pradesh to determine the exact number of backward communities among the state’s 5.5 crore population. She emphasized the need for an accurate count of socially disadvantaged groups facing caste-based discrimination. She stressed that representation in politics, education, and employment should be proportionate to population statistics, advocating for reservations based on demographic realities.

Taking a dig at the previous YSRCP government, Sharmila accused former Chief Minister Jagan Mohan Reddy of suppressing the caste census data conducted before elections. She alleged that Jagan, acting under BJP’s influence, deliberately withheld the survey findings and conspired to ensure they were never made public.
She also criticized the BJP for misleading the public by portraying the demand for a nationwide caste census as a conspiracy to abolish reservations. She urged people not to fall into the BJP’s trap and called on Chief Minister Chandrababu to immediately launch a caste census in Andhra Pradesh.
