Saritha Komatireddy, the Telugu-origin Republican candidate for New York Attorney General, has lost to Democratic incumbent Letitia James in the US midterm elections. Although she entered the race with the backing of Donald Trump, victory eluded her. After the results were announced, Komatireddy conceded graciously in an emotional post on the social media platform X.
Responding to the outcome, Komatireddy thanked the thousands of volunteers, supporters and people of New York who stood by her campaign. “I am proud of the campaign we ran,” she said, adding that it showed politics need not be only about hatred and division, but about bringing people together. She said true public service means serving people selflessly, not seeking celebrity status or personal gain. “Even though I lost the election, I will not give up my resolve to do good for the people,” she said, pledging to continue working to make New York safer and stronger. Komatireddy had earned notable recognition in the pre-election debate, where she held her own against James.
Komatireddy, 41, has family roots in Telangana, and her parents migrated to the United States decades ago. Born in Brooklyn, New York, she grew up in Missouri. She has long experience in the legal profession. She began her career as a lecturer at Columbia Law School and later took on key responsibilities as a federal prosecutor, where she led prosecutions in high-profile criminal cases involving drug trafficking, terrorism, cybercrime and money laundering. She also served as Chief of Staff at the US Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA).
