The Trump administration has delivered a major setback to individuals seeking to immigrate to the United States, announcing a temporary suspension of immigrant visa interviews at all US embassies and consulates worldwide. The decision is reportedly aimed at curbing illegal immigration and reducing the burden of immigrants who may become dependent on public assistance.
As part of this move, the US government is significantly tightening its “public charge” rules. Under the revised approach, consular officers are being given special training to assess whether immigrants arriving from abroad will be able to support themselves financially or are likely to rely on government schemes and free assistance once in the country. The primary objective behind this training is to deny visas to applicants deemed likely to depend on public support in the future.
Officials have stated that, as the training process is currently underway, previously scheduled interviews are being cancelled and will be rescheduled for new dates shortly.
Separately, the Trump administration is also considering imposing an additional fee of $103,265 (over Rs 85 lakh) on H-1B visas issued to skilled foreign workers. Reports suggest that such a move could deal a significant blow to the US economy itself, with experts warning that a steep hike in fees could prompt American companies to shift high-paying jobs to other countries, including India, ultimately setting the US back in its ability to attract global talent.
