India and Japan have long shared cordial relations, and this bond was further strengthened during a recent visit by Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi to India. During the visit, she held talks with Prime Minister Modi, resulting in several agreements. Beyond bilateral interests, the discussions focused on peace and stability in the Asia-Pacific region, covering key areas such as defence, emerging technology, bullet train development, trade, and the environment.

On the defence front, the two countries reached highly significant agreements, deciding to strengthen military cooperation to bolster their security. As part of this, joint military exercises involving the army, navy, and air force of both nations will be expanded further. Beyond exercises alone, the two countries agreed to jointly develop advanced military equipment and defence technology indigenously, a move expected to significantly benefit India’s “Make in India” defence sector.

Special focus was placed during the visit on accelerating construction of India’s first dream project, the Mumbai-Ahmedabad high-speed rail corridor. To ensure the project’s early completion, the Japanese government signed official agreements sanctioning a fresh tranche of loan funding. Japan is providing India with its “Shinkansen” bullet train technology, regarded as the safest and fastest in the world. Timely completion of this prestigious project is expected to completely transform India’s transportation landscape.

With the future increasingly shaped by digital technology and artificial intelligence, the two nations agreed to collaborate on meeting upcoming technological needs. To address the global shortage of computer chips and semiconductors, Japan will support the establishment of semiconductor plants in India to strengthen the supply chain. The two countries will also work together on research in artificial intelligence (AI), 5G, and upcoming 6G networks. Additionally, they plan to share information in the field of cybersecurity to protect digital systems from rising cyberattacks.

India is taking steps toward addressing global warming and eliminating pollution, and Japan has expressed full support for this effort. Both countries are focusing on developing environmentally friendly energy sources. Japanese companies are set to make substantial investments in India in green hydrogen, solar power, and manufacturing — sectors expected to serve as future alternatives to petrol and diesel. Japan has agreed to transfer advanced technology to India in solar panel manufacturing and wind energy to promote clean energy adoption, a move expected to reduce pollution while creating new employment opportunities in India.

Development of India’s northeastern states, including Assam, Meghalaya, and Tripura, was also identified as a priority. The Japan International Cooperation Agency has allocated substantial funding for the construction of international-standard roads and improved bridges in these northeastern regions. Better transport infrastructure in these hilly northeastern states is expected to further enhance trade relations with Southeast Asian countries.

Through this visit, the bond between India and Japan has deepened beyond mere trade ties into a stronger friendship. The agreements reached in critical areas such as economic growth, technological advancement, and national defence are expected to benefit the development of both nations in the days ahead,
