Conditions within the US Department of Defense are becoming increasingly chaotic. Since Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth took charge, more than 25 senior military officials have been removed from their positions, while promotions due to another 45 officers have been put on hold. These changes have sparked debate, coming at a time when the US has been at war with Iran for six months.
The Pentagon suffered another fresh shock recently when Army Secretary Dan Driscoll resigned from his post. Driscoll is a close associate of US Vice President JD Vance, with the two having studied together at Yale Law School. At one point, Driscoll was even considered a potential future successor to Hegseth. However, reports indicate there were differences between Driscoll and Hegseth over army leadership and efforts to reshape the military. Trump had also entrusted Driscoll with several important tasks related to Ukraine, and his resignation at such a time has sparked discussion over its impact on the Army. Since Hegseth assumed office, many key officials across the US military have changed, including the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, the Navy’s top officer, and the Army Chief of Staff.
More than 25 senior officers have lost their positions since Hegseth took over. Of the Joint Chiefs who were in place when he arrived, only the heads of the Marine Corps and Space Force remain in their posts today. Such a large number of officials changing in so short a time is considered highly unusual, raising fears that the military’s experience and established practices could be undermined. Among those whose promotions have been stalled are Black, Hispanic, and women officers, leading to allegations of bias in these decisions. Some officers have expressed dissatisfaction, arguing that promotions in the military should be based on merit and that halting them in this manner is inappropriate.
However, the Pentagon has not accepted these accounts. Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell said differences of opinion among generals are normal, and also denied reports of a weapons shortage, stating that the US has sufficient arms. Another issue drawing attention is that the Pentagon has not held an official media briefing since May 5, with critics saying the public is not receiving adequate information from the Defense Department even as the war continues.
Despite these numerous issues, President Donald Trump has continued to stand firmly behind Hegseth. He has also asked Congress to approve a massive $1.5 trillion defense budget. This suggests that even as changes and controversies continue within the Pentagon, Hegseth’s hold on power remains strong.
