A rare and emotionally charged incident unfolded along the Line of Control in Jammu and Kashmir as the Indian Army safely repatriated a Pakistani national who had inadvertently crossed into Indian territory. The handover, conducted amid the prevailing hostilities between the two nations, drew widespread attention when photographs of an Indian Army Major shaking hands with a Pakistani Army officer at the time of the exchange were shared on the Army’s official social media handles.
The individual, identified as Asad Khan, a resident of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province in Pakistan, was apprehended on June 12 while attempting to cross the Line of Control near Simari village in the Teetwal sector of Kupwara district. The Indian Army confirmed that Khan was treated with dignity and full humanitarian consideration throughout his period in custody, in strict accordance with its established professional protocols.
His detention had meanwhile triggered a wave of appeals on social media from residents of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, calling on Indian authorities to release him and ensure his safe return. On June 18, the Indian Army successfully handed Khan back to Pakistani forces at a designated border crossing point, bringing the episode to a peaceful and orderly conclusion despite the fraught state of bilateral relations.
Citing the repatriation as an embodiment of its core values, the Indian Army stated in its official post that the safe return of a national of an adversarial state reflected its unwavering commitment to humanitarian principles, professional ethics, and military responsibility. The Army emphasised that extending dignity to Khan during his detention, even under prevailing circumstances, stood as a testament to the values that define its conduct both on and off the battlefield.
