A major fraud has been uncovered in the NEET UG 2026 examination, conducted nationwide for admissions into medical education courses. Gujarat Police have caught a scam in which refund amounts meant for NEET candidates were being siphoned off. A Bihar student who was hacking into students’ accounts to carry out this fraud has been arrested.
How did this scam work?
NTA’s IT department officials noticed during a technical audit that bank details in candidates’ profiles were suddenly being changed. Around the same time, complaints came in from several students that they were unable to log into their accounts. Alerted by these red flags, NTA officials immediately informed the Gujarat Police Cyber Crime department. Cyber police swung into action and launched an investigation, tracking digital evidence and IP addresses. They identified that all the hacking activity was being carried out from Bihar, following which police travelled there and apprehended the accused. However, police suspect that a network of more cybercriminals may be operating behind this.

The mechanics of the fraud:
When students who had applied for the NEET examination requested a refund for certain reasons, NTA would deposit that money back into their accounts. Exploiting this process, the accused used technical knowledge to hack into the official profiles of NEET candidates. He stole students’ user IDs and passwords and logged into their accounts. He then replaced the actual bank account details of students who were due to receive refunds with his own or fake bank account details. Through this, he had planned to redirect lakhs of rupees in refund money — meant for students — directly into his own accounts.
