Centre Considers Extending Driving Licence Validity To 50 Years

The Central Government is examining a proposal to extend the validity of driving licences from the current 20 years to 50 years, a move that could benefit millions of licence holders across the country. If approved, the proposal would significantly reduce the need for frequent renewals and simplify the licensing process for motorists.

Officials said the Ministry is currently reviewing multiple proposals aimed at improving transport-related services, with the extension of driving licence validity being one of the key measures under consideration. However, they clarified that no final decision has been taken and discussions remain at an early stage.

Under the existing system, a driving licence is valid for 20 years, after which motorists are required to apply for renewal. Depending on the circumstances, applicants may also need to submit supporting documents, including medical or health certificates. The proposed extension is intended to make the process more convenient and improve access to government services.

The proposal has reportedly raised concerns among some state governments, which fear that a reduction in licence renewals could impact revenue collections. Central officials, however, have argued that the changes would not result in significant financial losses, noting that licence-related fees can continue to be collected through online platforms. The government is also working to fully digitise services such as vehicle ownership transfers and permit renewals.

Apart from licence reforms, authorities are considering measures to strengthen traffic law enforcement. One proposal under review involves introducing a negative points system for traffic violations, under which repeat offenders could face suspension or cancellation of their driving licences. Officials believe the mechanism would help improve road discipline and ensure better compliance with traffic regulations. No timeline has been announced for implementing the proposed reforms.
