Nepalese politics has taken a dramatic turn with 35-year-old rap singer and former Kathmandu mayor Balendra Sha being sworn in as the country’s prime minister. In the first elections following last year’s massive youth-led protests, the Rashtriya Swatantra Party (RSP), under Balendra’s leadership, achieved a clean sweep. Frustration over corruption, dynastic politics, and the failures of the older generation drove the Nepalese electorate to embrace Balendra as a symbol of change.

Born in 1990 in Kathmandu, Balendra Sha is a structural engineer by profession and pursued part of his education in Karnataka, India. He gained popularity in 2013 through a rap battle, using his music to highlight societal issues and government corruption. Songs like *Balidan* garnered millions of views on YouTube, and his trademark black square glasses and black blazer became his signature style, making him a youth icon.

Balendra first entered politics in 2022 as an independent candidate for the Kathmandu mayoral seat, defeating established parties that had ruled the city for decades. During his tenure, he implemented strict measures such as cleaning the city and demolishing illegal constructions, drawing both praise and criticism. In the recent general elections, he defeated political heavyweights, including former Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli in his own constituency, setting the record as Nepal’s youngest-ever prime minister.

As the new prime minister, Balendra faces significant challenges. He has promised to create 1.2 million new jobs, eliminate corruption, and reform the judiciary. Critics, however, have raised concerns over his tough approach toward street vendors during his mayoral tenure and questioned whether his relatively inexperienced party can effectively manage the national economy.

Despite these hurdles, Balendra appears determined to deliver on the vision reflected in his music. His rise from a rap artist to the highest political office in Nepal has captured nationwide attention. Citizens and political observers alike are closely watching to see whether Balendra Sha can transform public expectations into tangible reforms and lead Nepal toward meaningful progress.
