The Trump administration has renewed its push to acquire Greenland, with the Republican Party introducing a bill titled the “Greenland Annexation and Statehood” proposal. The bill was tabled by Republican lawmaker Randy Fine, who said it would empower the US government to initiate steps toward bringing Greenland under American control. He argued that the move is necessary to prevent US adversaries from gaining influence in the strategically important Arctic region.
Randy Fine stated that countries such as Russia and China are attempting to strengthen their presence in the Arctic, and asserted that the United States would not allow this to happen. He described the proposed annexation as a crucial strategic measure to safeguard American interests and counter rival powers in the region.
According to international media reports, former President Donald Trump has been actively exploring ways to distance Greenland from Denmark. As part of these efforts, the Trump camp allegedly considered offering financial incentives to Greenland’s residents, proposing cash payments ranging from $10,000 to $100,000 per person. However, the proposal was firmly rejected by Greenland’s leadership.
Greenland Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen said that the island’s future cannot be decided by foreign powers. The move has also triggered concern among NATO countries. Greenland, home to about 57,000 people, has once again come into global focus following the introduction of the US bill aimed at annexing the island.
