Guwahati: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is set to retain power in Assam for a third consecutive term in the Assembly elections scheduled between March and April 2026, according to a People’s Pulse survey. The study projects that the BJP, contesting on its own, could win between 69 and 74 of the 126 Assembly seats, with an estimated vote share of around 39 per cent across the state.
The Congress, the principal opposition party, is expected to emerge as the runner-up with a projected vote share of 37 per cent. The survey indicates that the party may secure between 25 and 29 seats. Despite a marginal improvement in its vote share compared to previous elections, the Congress is likely to fall short of the majority mark. Among regional players, the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) is projected to receive about 7 per cent of the vote share, while the Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) may secure approximately 5.5 per cent.
The survey also highlights public satisfaction with Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s leadership. Nearly 30 per cent of respondents expressed a preference for him to continue as Chief Minister, citing development initiatives and firm governance as key factors contributing to the BJP’s positive outlook.
The People’s Pulse survey was conducted over a period of nearly 45 days, from November 15 to December 31, with around 5,000 samples collected from diverse sections of society across Assam. Based on these findings, the survey suggests that the BJP’s political dominance in the state is likely to continue in the 2026 Assembly elections.
