Hyderabad Grapples with Severe Cold Wave and Health Risks

Hyderabad is witnessing a sharp rise in cold conditions as chilly winds sweep the city, with early morning temperatures on Monday reaching record lows. Across Telangana, several areas recorded minimum temperatures as low as 3°C, while other regions reported 7–13°C. The Meteorological Department has warned that the next three days may see intensified cold, with night temperatures 2–3°C below normal. Similar conditions are expected in Andhra Pradesh, with fog and cold winds persisting during early mornings and evenings, causing travel disruptions and commuter difficulties.

The abrupt drop in temperature is impacting public health, weakening immunity and triggering a rise in respiratory illnesses, including colds, coughs, and flu, affecting all age groups. Medical experts have advised limiting outdoor exposure during early morning and late evening hours, particularly for children and the elderly, to prevent hypothermia and other cold-related health risks.

Authorities have urged citizens to wear warm clothing, including mufflers and gloves, and consume hot, nutritious meals while avoiding cold foods and beverages. They also recommend incorporating immunity-boosting ingredients like ginger, garlic, and turmeric into daily diets. The cold is contributing to dry skin, for which moisturizers or coconut oil are advised. People with heart conditions have been cautioned against strenuous activity, as low temperatures can constrict blood vessels and increase blood pressure.
