The Union government is planning to introduce colour-coded driving licences to distinguish Indian citizens from foreign nationals, according to reports. Officials are said to be preparing the proposal in confidence, and it is being presented as a road safety measure. At present, all driving licences in the country look alike.
The move is aimed at curbing fake driving licences and fraudulent document submissions. Intelligence agencies have reportedly identified gaps in ensuring that foreign nationals follow road safety rules while driving in India. With distinct card colours, traffic police and other officials could establish a driver’s nationality within seconds during inspections.
The proposal also includes stricter conditions for obtaining a licence. Applicants would be required to watch a 30-minute safety tutorial and score at least 75 per cent to pass the driving test. Compliance would be verified through the online Sarathi portal.
Services such as licence renewal, duplicate licences and change of address are also expected to be consolidated under a single unified form. Foreign travellers and people who move through border areas are likely to be the most affected by the changes.
It remains unclear how far colour-coded licnces will reduce road accidents or what impact they will have on foreign visitors. Official guidelines are expected to be issued soon.
