New Delhi: The Union Government has issued a clear statement in Parliament, confirming that development of the Warangal Airport will move forward only if the Telangana Government hands over the required land. At the same time, the Centre rejected the proposals for new airports in Kothagudem and Mahabubnagar, citing that the identified locations are not suitable for airport construction.

The government further clarified that while an airport is technically feasible in Nizamabad, several hurdles must be addressed before the project can progress. Telangana had recently submitted proposals for establishing new Greenfield airports in Peddapalli, Kothagudem, Mahabubnagar and Nizamabad, seeking Central approval. The Union Government has now provided detailed responses on the status of each site.

According to the Ministry of Civil Aviation, the Warangal Airport land is under the jurisdiction of the Airports Authority of India (AAI), and an additional 253 acres is required for expansion. The Union Government reiterated that the next step depends completely on the Telangana Government handing over the land. It also stressed that the sites proposed for Kothagudem and Mahabubnagar were found to be unfit for airport development based on feasibility parameters.

Preliminary feasibility studies have been completed for three of the four proposed airports, excluding Peddapalli. Findings revealed that airport construction in Kothagudem and Mahabubnagar is not viable. The Nizamabad project remains possible but requires resolving key constraints and obtaining a No Objection Certificate from the Ministry of Defence. These clarifications were provided by Minister of State for Civil Aviation Muralidhar Mohali in response to questions raised by Telangana MPs in the Rajya Sabha.
