New Delhi: The recent aircraft crash near Ahmedabad, which resulted in the tragic deaths of 270 people—240 passengers and 30 crew members—has drawn widespread attention. The flight crashed just minutes after takeoff, prompting an investigation by the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB).

In its preliminary report, the AAIB found that the accident was triggered by a malfunction in the fuel control switches shortly after takeoff. It stated that both switches shut down within seconds, leading to the engines failing mid-air.

Following the report, several international media outlets speculated that the pilot may have deliberately shut down the engines. According to the AAIB’s initial findings, one pilot was heard questioning the other about the engine shutdown, and a “Mayday” call was later made. However, AAIB Director General GVG Yugandhar clarified that such conclusions are premature.

“The investigation is still in progress. Drawing conclusions at this stage based on unverified reports is irresponsible,” Yugandhar said in a statement. He urged the public and media to avoid misinformation that could cause unnecessary fear among air travelers. He further assured that a final report—detailing root causes and safety recommendations—would be released after the thorough investigation.

Since its establishment in 2012, the AAIB has investigated 92 accidents and 111 incidents, maintaining a strong track record. The agency confirmed that the current probe is being conducted in line with international protocols.
