Washington: A leading American expert on China affairs has issued a critical warning, urging the United States to completely sever diplomatic and economic ties with China to counter a growing national security threat. The expert cautioned that failure to take swift action could expose the US to dangers surpassing even the COVID-19 pandemic.
The alert follows the recent arrest of two Chinese nationals, Yunking Jian and Junyong Liu, accused of illegally smuggling a hazardous fungus into the US. The fungus, known to cause Fusarium head blight and scab diseases, poses a significant risk to major crops including wheat, barley, and corn by severely reducing yield and quality.

Authorities charged the suspects with illegal smuggling, conspiracy, and visa fraud. Gordon G. Chang, a prominent analyst monitoring Chinese Communist Party activities, characterized the incident as part of a covert mission aimed at destabilizing the US from within, aligned with a Maoist-inspired “People’s War” strategy to politically, economically, and psychologically weaken adversaries.
Chang alleged that the arrested individuals had prior involvement with the fungus in China and conducted unlawful research after transporting it to the US. He described the fungus as a form of agricultural bioterrorism with potential consequences including food shortages, economic disruption, liver damage, reproductive health issues, and other severe medical conditions.
The expert stressed that severing ties with China is the only effective response to such threats, emphasizing the urgency for policymakers to act decisively amid escalating geopolitical tensions and biosecurity concerns.
