Amaravati: The Andhra Pradesh government has appointed senior IPS officer Harish Kumar Gupta as the full-time Director General of Police (DGP). The official notification confirming his appointment was issued on Monday. Gupta, a 1992-batch IPS officer, will serve a two-year term in the top post.
Hailing from Jammu and Kashmir, Harish Kumar Gupta began his policing career as the ASP of Khammam. He subsequently served in various capacities across the state, including ASP roles in Medak and Peddapalli districts, SP of Krishna and Nalgonda districts, and as DCP of South Zone, Hyderabad.
His administrative career includes key positions such as IG of Guntur Range, Additional DGP of Law and Order, and Additional DGP for Provisions and Logistics. He has also served as the Chairman of the Police Recruitment Board and as Director General of Railways. In May 2022, he was appointed as Principal Secretary, Home Department.
Following the retirement of then DGP Dwaraka Tirumala Rao on January 31, Gupta was named in-charge DGP. With Monday’s order, he now assumes full-time responsibilities as the state’s top police officer.
