New Delhi/Islamabad: Diplomatic relations between India and Pakistan have come under renewed strain following the aftermath of the Pahalgam Didi incident, as both countries engage in heightened rhetoric over long-standing issues. Citing Pakistan’s continued support for cross-border terrorism, India has implemented a series of countermeasures, including steps to restrict the flow of Indus River waters — a critical resource for Pakistan. The development has further strained ties, with Islamabad showing little inclination toward de-escalation.
In a provocative statement this week, Pakistan’s Lieutenant General Ahmad Sharif stoked tensions during a speech at a local university, warning that if India blocks water flow, Pakistan would respond severely. “If India stops our water, we will stop their breath. Blood will flow in place of water in the Indus,” he declared. His remarks echo earlier threats made by designated terrorist Hafiz Saeed, who similarly warned of bloodshed in response to India’s dam construction projects in Kashmir.

India has condemned the comments, with officials stating they reflect an increasingly militant tone from Pakistan’s leadership and undermine the spirit of the Indus Waters Treaty. International observers have also expressed concern over the inflammatory rhetoric, warning that such statements could destabilize the region further and derail any potential for diplomatic engagement.
