Sana’a: In a significant relief, Yemeni authorities have revoked the death sentence of Kerala nurse Nimisha Priya, who was facing capital punishment in a murder case. The decision was announced at midnight on Monday by the office of India’s Grand Mufti and Sunni leader Kanthapuram A.P. Aboobacker Musliyar. The Indian Ministry of External Affairs has not yet issued an official confirmation.
According to reports, a high-level meeting in Sana’a, attended by northern Yemeni officials and international diplomats, paved the way for the decision. Following an appeal from the Grand Mufti, Yemeni Sufi scholar Sheikh Habib Omar bin Hafiz appointed a negotiation team, while Aboobacker Musliyar mediated with Yemeni authorities and international representatives. Religious leaders’ intervention was cited as the primary factor behind the revocation. However, it remains unclear whether Nimisha Priya will be released or if her sentence will be commuted to life imprisonment. A final decision is expected after discussions with the family of the deceased Yemeni national, Talal Mahdi.
