US President Donald Trump is imposing trade tariffs on various countries while simultaneously working to bring them closer to the US. Chinese President Xi Jinping is preparing to visit the United States from the 23rd to the 25th of this month for bilateral talks with President Trump.
Notably, this will be the second time the two leaders have held talks in the past six months. Trump visited Beijing and met Xi in May this year. China has described the Chinese president’s upcoming visit as a notable milestone that will go down in the history of relations between the two countries. A spokesperson for China’s foreign ministry told reporters in Beijing that Xi is traveling to the US at Trump’s invitation, adding that the meeting will include in-depth discussions on bilateral relations as well as global peace and stability.
The spokesperson said the talks are expected to focus on strengthening cooperation between the two countries in a way that brings great benefit to the people of both nations and, in turn, benefits the world. Another notable detail is that Trump is reportedly set to personally receive Xi at the airport, a rare gesture of welcome. Topics likely to come up in their discussions include trade tariffs, AI, military cooperation, technology, the Russia-Ukraine war, the arms race in space, and the conflicts in West Asia.
The upcoming meeting gains added significance in light of Trump’s recent move to bring in a law imposing 100 percent trade tariffs on countries such as China and India over their purchase of oil from Russia.
