The World Health Organization (WHO) has clarified that there is no need for global panic over the hantavirus (Andes virus strain) outbreak reported aboard the MV Hondius cruise ship. The agency stated that the overall risk to the global population remains very low and the situation is under control. WHO Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus emphasised that the outbreak does not resemble a COVID-like pandemic scenario.
The Andes virus is a rare strain of hantavirus, typically transmitted through rodent droppings and urine, but it has the unusual capability of limited human-to-human transmission in very close contact situations. Health officials confirmed that eight cases have been reported in connection with the cruise ship, including three deaths. Authorities also noted that the virus can take up to six weeks to show symptoms after infection.
The first case was detected on April 6 in a passenger who initially showed symptoms similar to a respiratory illness, leading to delayed identification of the virus. The patient died on April 11, followed by the death of his wife and another infected passenger. At present, one patient is undergoing intensive care treatment in South Africa, while several others are being treated in the Netherlands.
Following approval from the Spanish government, the MV Hondius is now heading towards the Canary Islands. Passengers on board will undergo medical screening before being repatriated to their respective countries. Authorities believe some passengers may have been exposed during earlier travel in South American countries such as Argentina and Chile, where the virus is known to circulate among rodents.
Health experts have stated that while the situation is serious, it remains contained and under control. WHO has reiterated that the risk to the general public is low, and continuous monitoring is underway to prevent any further spread of the infection.
