Water Becomes New Target in Iran-Israel War

The ongoing Iran-Israel conflict in West Asia has taken a dangerous new turn, with water infrastructure now emerging as a key target. While oil reserves were initially the main focus, rival nations are increasingly striking drinking water facilities in Gulf countries to exploit vulnerabilities. Experts warn that such attacks could escalate global tensions, with water security becoming a critical national security concern.

Gulf Nations Highly Dependent on Desalination
Gulf countries face extreme water scarcity due to arid climates and limited natural freshwater sources. To meet demand, they rely heavily on desalination plants, which convert seawater into potable water. Approximately 60% of the world’s desalination units are located in this region, making these facilities highly strategic and vulnerable.

Country-Specific Water Reliance
Kuwait and the UAE source 90% of their drinking water from desalination plants, Oman 86%, Bahrain 80%, and Saudi Arabia and Qatar meet 70% of their water needs through these facilities. The heavy dependence on desalinated water leaves these nations exposed to targeted attacks, which could disrupt daily life and economic stability.

Rising Threats Amid the Conflict
Since the war began on February 28, both sides have reportedly targeted critical water infrastructure. Iran alleges that Israel and the U.S. struck its plants, while Bahrain has reported attacks by Iran. U.S. intelligence warns that damage to a major plant could force the evacuation of capital cities within days, underscoring the strategic and humanitarian stakes of these assaults.

Iran Faces Lower Risk, Gulf Nations at Greater Danger
Iran’s water supply is less vulnerable as it relies primarily on dams and underground aquifers. Gulf nations, however, face a critical crisis if desalination plants are damaged, as they import 80–90% of their food. Experts warn that interruptions in water supply could trigger food shortages, making water security a decisive factor in regional stability.
