New Delhi: The Wakf (Amendment) Bill 2025, recently passed by both the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha, is now facing legal scrutiny as Congress MP Mohammad Jawed and AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi have filed petitions in the Supreme Court challenging its constitutional validity.
The petitioners argued that the amended legislation infringes on the fundamental rights of the Muslim community and undermines the autonomy of Wakf institutions. They alleged that the bill grants unilateral control to district collectors over Wakf land surveys and management, which could lead to increased instances of land encroachments.
According to the petitions, the bill violates key principles of religious freedom and community self-governance. The Supreme Court is yet to take up the matter for hearing.

Meanwhile, widespread protests have broken out in several cities, including Kolkata, Chennai, and Ahmedabad. Following Friday prayers, demonstrators gathered in large numbers demanding a repeal of the legislation.
In Tamil Nadu, actor Vijay’s party, Tamizhaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), launched state-wide protests opposing the bill. TVK workers staged demonstrations in major cities such as Chennai and Coimbatore.
In Delhi, police, along with paramilitary forces, conducted flag marches in sensitive areas including Jamia Nagar and Jamia Millia Islamia to maintain law and order.
Muslim leaders have raised concerns that the amended provisions transfer crucial authority from Wakf boards to the district administration, thereby weakening community oversight. They warned that the move could pave the way for the misuse and illegal occupation of Wakf properties through proxy ownership.
The opposition continues to mount pressure on the Centre, demanding the immediate withdrawal of the Wakf (Amendment) Bill 2025.
