Debate over the nuclear arms race in West Asia has resurfaced after US intelligence agencies assessed that Saudi Arabia could, in the future, take steps toward developing nuclear weapons. American intelligence officials believe Riyadh may harbour an interest in acquiring nuclear bomb capability, and a classified report on the matter has reportedly been submitted to the US Congress.
The assessment comes even as the US government moves ahead with plans to supply uranium to Saudi Arabia for peaceful, civilian purposes. The Trump administration has approved a long-term, 30-year nuclear cooperation agreement with the kingdom. However, several US lawmakers have raised strong objections, warning that providing Saudi Arabia with uranium enrichment technology could eventually give it the capability to produce nuclear weapons using that same infrastructure.
Under the current agreement, Saudi Arabia is permitted to enrich uranium only up to 5 percent, though discussions are reportedly underway to raise that ceiling to 20 percent. Low-level enriched uranium is generally sufficient for civilian applications such as electricity generation, but producing a nuclear weapon requires enrichment levels of 60 to 90 percent. Experts caution that once a country gains access to the foundational enrichment technology, scaling it up further down the line is not especially difficult.
Analysts attribute Saudi Arabia’s posture to regional security concerns, particularly the threat posed by Iran, its principal rival in the region, which has continued to advance its own nuclear programme. Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman has previously stated publicly that should Iran develop a nuclear weapon, Saudi Arabia would be compelled to pursue nuclear weapons of its own to protect its national security.
Although the current US-Saudi agreement and the technology involved are framed strictly around civilian use, reports suggesting that Riyadh could eventually redirect its nuclear capability toward military purposes have gained wider attention amid escalating tensions across West Asia.
