The US Federal Appeals Court has declared several tariffs imposed under President Donald Trump as unlawful, including the 50% levy on Indian imports linked to allegations of aiding Russia through oil purchases. The court observed that Trump exceeded his economic authority in enforcing the duties, which significantly impacted multiple countries. It allowed the tariffs to remain in effect only until mid-October, after which they must be withdrawn, but granted permission to appeal the decision in the Supreme Court.
Reacting to the verdict, Trump criticized the ruling as biased and announced plans to challenge it in the Supreme Court. He warned that removing the tariffs would be a “historic disaster” for the US economy, insisting that duties were the only way to bridge trade deficits, protect American workers, farmers, and manufacturers, and maintain economic strength. During his tenure, Trump raised base tariffs from 10% to as high as 100% on several countries, with Canada, Mexico, China, and India among the hardest hit, triggering ongoing trade disputes with Washington.
