UK Refuses Use of Airbases for Potential US Strikes

Tensions between the United States and Iran continue to escalate amid persistent uncertainty over the nuclear deal. US President Donald Trump has issued a fresh warning to Tehran, stating that Iran must reach a nuclear agreement with Washington within the next 10 days or face severe consequences. He indicated that failure to compromise could leave the US with no option but to consider military action.

Reports suggest that the United States has begun exploring operational options in the event of a confrontation. As part of these preparations, Washington reportedly sought permission to use key UK airbases for potential strikes on Iran. However, the government led by UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer declined the request, refusing to allow the use of Diego Garcia and RAF bases for offensive operations.

British authorities cited concerns over international law, stating that participation in any unlawful military action could make the UK legally accountable. Since 2001, Britain has adopted a more cautious policy regarding support for allied military interventions. In previous US operations involving Iran, the UK limited its involvement to defensive cooperation rather than direct engagement in offensive strikes.

In response to the UK’s decision, Trump criticized the move on his Truth Social platform and warned against relinquishing control over the Chagos Islands. He emphasized the strategic importance of Diego Garcia, describing it as a crucial base for long-range US military operations and a potential countermeasure against what he termed a dangerous regime.

Meanwhile, the US has reportedly presented three primary demands to Iran: a complete halt to uranium enrichment, abandonment of its ballistic missile development program, and an end to support for militant groups in West Asia. Demonstrating military readiness, the US has deployed the USS Abraham Lincoln to the region, while the USS Gerald R. Ford aircraft carrier is also heading there. More than 50 advanced fighter jets and refueling aircraft have reportedly been placed on standby, with indications that US forces are prepared for potential action at short notice.
