The British government has officially recognized Palestine as a sovereign nation, marking a significant diplomatic move despite opposition from the United States and Israel. Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced the decision, citing efforts to restore hope for peace among Palestinians and Israelis and to support a two-state solution.
Canada and Australia have also recognized Palestine, and over 140 countries worldwide already acknowledge its statehood. Starmer had previously stated in July that if Israel did not cooperate on Gaza ceasefires, UN assistance, and long-term peace measures, the UK would move forward with recognition.
The decision has drawn criticism from Israel, which condemned the move as rewarding Hamas and complicating regional security, particularly in light of the October 7, 2023 attacks. Reports indicate that France and other nations may follow Britain’s lead in recognizing Palestine in the near future.
