New Delhi: The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has announced a new initiative aimed at simplifying the Aadhaar biometric update process for children aged five and above. Under the proposed system, children will be able to update their Aadhaar details directly at their schools, eliminating the need for parents to visit government offices.
Speaking on the development, UIDAI CEO Bhuvanesh Kumar stated that the biometric update project will be implemented in schools across all districts, with biometric machines being deployed to facilitate the process. The move is expected to benefit millions of families across the country.
According to UIDAI estimates, over 7 crore children aged above five have not yet completed their mandatory Aadhaar biometric updates. While Aadhaar cards are typically issued at the time of school admission, the biometric data must be updated once the child turns five. The update is free for children between the ages of five and seven, but a fee of Rs 100 is applicable if the update is done after the child turns seven.

Kumar also highlighted that a second biometric update is mandatory once a child turns 15. UIDAI is exploring the possibility of extending the school-based update model to colleges to facilitate this requirement.
“Aadhaar plays a crucial role in accessing several government welfare schemes. Timely updates are essential to ensure uninterrupted access to these benefits,” Kumar said. He added that UIDAI is currently testing the necessary technology for school-based updates and expects the system to be operational within the next 45 to 60 days.
