Recent U.S. strikes on Kharg Island, a key oil export hub of Iran, reportedly caused significant damage, according to U.S. President Donald Trump. However, a new report by Axios claims that the United States is now considering a plan to take control of the strategically important island. The report noted that if disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz continue, U.S. forces could move toward seizing Kharg Island.
According to the report, a senior White House official said President Trump has not yet taken a final decision on launching a ground operation to capture the island. However, the option could be reconsidered if efforts to reopen the Strait of Hormuz fail. Officials believe Kharg Island is vital to Iran’s economy, making it a strategic target in the ongoing conflict.
International media reports suggest that any potential ground operation could unfold in multiple phases. Initially, U.S. forces may target radar systems, air defense networks and anti-ship missile batteries stationed on the island. The next stage could focus on capturing the airstrip located in the northern part of Kharg Island, enabling the deployment of troops and equipment.
Subsequently, key infrastructure such as oil storage facilities could be brought under control before additional troops are deployed through landing platforms while naval units patrol nearby waters. However, experts warn that such an operation could trigger retaliation from Iran, including possible attacks on oil pipelines in Gulf countries or oil facilities in Saudi Arabia. For now, it remains unclear whether the United States will proceed with the plan to seize Kharg Island.
