The Middle East conflict has now entered its 30th day, with hostilities between the United States, Israel, and Iran showing no signs of abating. In a strategic escalation, the U.S. has deployed unmanned drone speedboats to patrol the Gulf maritime routes for the first time. The Pentagon confirmed the move, stating that the vessels are intended to strengthen surveillance and prevent further Iranian strikes in key waterways.
While U.S. and Israeli forces continue their attacks on Iranian targets, Tehran has responded with retaliatory measures, destroying several American military aircraft and inflicting significant damage on strategic installations. In this context, the drone speedboats are being used to intercept Iranian operations and monitor enemy movements with greater efficiency. Officials emphasized that the vessels’ high speed and maneuverability make them suitable for rapid-response missions in contested maritime zones.
The unmanned vessels, called Global Autonomous Reconnaissance Craft (GARC) and developed by BlackSea Technologies, are approximately five meters long and can also be used for suicide-style attacks if necessary. As part of Operation Epic Fury, the U.S. conducted reconnaissance missions spanning 2,200 nautical miles, with continuous patrols lasting up to 450 hours. The deployment specifically aims to counter Iranian drone strikes targeting oil tankers in the Gulf.
Despite their operational promise, the drone speedboats have faced technical challenges. Previous trials conducted over several years saw failures, including collisions between boats and occasional system malfunctions. Nonetheless, U.S. defense authorities maintain that these cost-effective unmanned vessels are critical for ensuring maritime security and countering the growing threat of Iranian attacks in the region.
In parallel, President Trump has authorized a 10-day offensive targeting Iranian energy and fuel infrastructure while simultaneously allowing diplomatic channels to remain open until April 6. Both sides continue to engage in strikes across the Gulf, highlighting the fragility of the situation and the persistent risk of escalation in the region. The U.S. deployment of drone speedboats marks a notable shift in the tactical approach to the ongoing conflict.
