A major political crisis has intensified in Tamil Nadu after the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) led by actor Vijay warned of a mass resignation of its 108 MLAs if rival parties DMK and AIADMK attempt to form a coalition government. The party alleged that despite receiving strong public support in the elections, the two traditional rivals are trying to come together to keep TVK out of power.
TVK, which has emerged as the single largest party with 108 seats, asserted that it should be invited to form the government. The party argued that as per constitutional norms, the Governor must first call the single largest party to stake claim. It also claimed that public mandate was being undermined by alleged backdoor political arrangements.
However, Governor R.N. Ravi Arlekar has reportedly refused to invite Vijay to form the government, stating that the party does not have sufficient numbers. He has insisted that TVK must produce written proof of support from at least 118 MLAs to prove majority. The Governor also rejected alternative proposals suggested by the party, further escalating the standoff.
Amid the uncertainty, TVK is exploring legal options and continues negotiations with smaller parties. It has already secured support from five Congress MLAs but remains short of the majority mark. Political discussions are also ongoing with Left parties and other smaller groups in an effort to bridge the gap.
Meanwhile, reports of behind-the-scenes talks between DMK and AIADMK have added fuel to speculation, with suggestions that Edappadi K. Palaniswami could be projected as a consensus chief ministerial candidate. Several parties, including CPI and VCK, have criticised the Governor’s stance, while DMK and actor Kamal Haasan have extended support to Vijay, calling the situation a challenge to the people’s mandate.
