The political landscape in Tamil Nadu has witnessed a significant shift following the strong electoral performance of Vijay-led Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK), which emerged as the single largest party by winning 108 of the 234 Assembly seats. The development has drawn widespread attention as TVK’s rise marks a major entry of a new political force in the state.
The party’s campaign strategy focused heavily on youth and women voters, with a total electorate of 5.73 crore, including 2.93 crore women and 14.6 lakh first-time voters. Analysts say TVK’s manifesto played a key role in shaping voter sentiment, with the party reportedly securing significant support based on its welfare-driven promises and outreach model.
TVK’s manifesto, inspired by the principles of the Tamil classic Tirukkural, emphasised governance based on virtue, wealth creation, and welfare. The party also projected an inclusive political ideology, rejecting caste- and religion-based politics while drawing inspiration from leaders such as Periyar, Ambedkar, and Kamarajar.
The manifesto included a wide range of welfare commitments, including ₹2,500 monthly assistance for women heads of households, free bus travel for women, six free LPG cylinders annually, ₹15,000 annual assistance for schoolchildren’s mothers, and multiple education and employment support schemes. For youth, it promised 5 lakh government jobs, stipends for internships, and financial assistance for higher education, while farmers were assured loan waivers, higher minimum support prices, and annual income support.
On governance reforms, TVK proposed the creation of an Artificial Intelligence ministry, AI university, and AI city, along with a Right to Service Act aimed at ensuring time-bound public service delivery. In the healthcare sector, the party promised ₹25 lakh insurance coverage per family and free IVF treatment in government hospitals, while also proposing wage hikes for police and workers in specific sectors.
However, economic experts have raised concerns over the fiscal feasibility of several promises, noting that the state already carries a debt burden of around ₹10 lakh crore. While some schemes appear implementable, others involving large-scale cash transfers, loan waivers, and subsidies could significantly strain state finances. With funding sources not clearly outlined in the manifesto, questions remain over long-term sustainability and implementation capacity.
As TVK transitions from a campaign force to a potential governing party, attention is now focused on whether its ambitious promises can be translated into practical governance, or whether fiscal constraints will force a recalibration of its agenda.
