The Telangana government has named a newly constructed road in Hyderabad’s Gachibowli-Nanakramguda Financial District after US President Donald Trump. Located adjacent to the newly built American consulate in the area, the road was officially inaugurated as “Donald Trump Avenue” during recent American Independence Day celebrations.
The inauguration was carried out by US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor and Telangana Deputy Chief Minister Bhatti Vikramarka. Trump responded by posting his appreciation on Truth Social, sharing a photo from the inauguration and describing it as an unprecedented honour bestowed upon him.
The Telangana government’s decision was driven by its aim to boost Hyderabad’s international profile and strengthen business and technology ties with the United States. Chief Minister Revanth Reddy had earlier announced plans to name key roads in Hyderabad after globally recognised personalities and institutions, with Trump being one such selection.
Trump’s post sent the story trending worldwide, but the decision has also triggered a local political dispute. While the Congress government describes it as a symbol of Telangana-US friendship, the opposition BJP has accused Congress of double standards. This is notably the first time a road in India has been named after a sitting American president, making it a widely discussed topic.
