The U.S. presidential election, marked by intense competition, has started to reveal its first results even as voting continues across some states. With results trickling in, Donald Trump has so far secured nine states, while Kamala Harris has won five.
Trump’s victories include Indiana, Kentucky, West Virginia, Tennessee, Oklahoma, Mississippi, Alabama, South Carolina, and Florida, giving him a significant lead. Harris, representing the Democratic side, has won Vermont, Massachusetts, New Jersey, Maryland, and Connecticut.
On Tuesday, millions of Americans headed to polling stations to choose the country’s 47th President. Voting opened between 7 a.m. and 11 a.m. and is expected to continue until midnight, which corresponds to 9 a.m. on Wednesday in Indian Standard Time.
The competition remains fierce, with about 160 million registered voters, out of which 82 million cast their ballots early—already surpassing half of the total votes cast in the last election. This high-stakes battle between Republican candidate Donald Trump and Democratic candidate Kamala Harris has already shown its intensity in Dixville Notch, the smallest polling station, where the first result ended in a tie, with each candidate receiving three votes.
