Washington/Kyiv:  US President Donald Trump has claimed that Russian President Vladimir Putin agreed to a one-week ceasefire in the ongoing Russia–Ukraine conflict, citing extreme winter conditions in Ukraine. Trump said he requested a temporary halt to fighting as Kyiv and several other regions are witnessing heavy snowfall and sub-zero temperatures, and added that Putin accepted the proposal and assured a seven-day pause. Trump also stated that discussions were held regarding a second phase of peace talks.

However, Russia has not officially confirmed any ceasefire announcement so far. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky meanwhile urged both sides to observe an “energy ceasefire,” calling for an immediate stop to attacks on power grids and oil infrastructure. Zelensky warned that continued strikes on energy facilities are pushing both nations toward deeper humanitarian and economic distress.

The Russia–Ukraine war, which began in February 2022, has already claimed thousands of civilian and military lives, with widespread destruction across Ukraine. While Trump expressed satisfaction over Putin’s reported agreement, Kyiv said it is awaiting formal confirmation from Moscow. Analysts say any temporary truce could provide limited relief, but lasting peace would depend on concrete diplomatic commitments from both sides.
